Food on the road

A travelling salesman's life is full of lunches and dinners unfortunately usually alone.

Our attention is therefore totally given to what we are eating.

When looking for a restaurant, we have several guide-lines:

  1. convenient parking:
  2. close to the hotel but preferably not the hotel restaurant where it is difficult to match good food with fine wine.;
  3. a lively atmosphere with colour and sound. Eating alone is sad enough without having to sit is a gloomy restaurant:
  4. style of cooking and type of food (fish, meat, local produce, etc.. );
  5. last but not least the price. The price is not of prime importantto the travelling salesman because his life is hard and his health will suffer if low pricing and low quality become his guide.

You will gather from this that the perfect restaurant is not easy to find nor all criteria easy to meet. Perhaps we can only sutisfy two categories at a time, 4 and 5 for example.

I wish to explode a myth that fresh seefood is only available at the coast.

During my long career I have found many fantastic restaurants far from the sea with seefood as the speciality.

Even in the mountains, there are chefs with the skill and ability to find and cook fresh produce.

Near Bolzano a restaurant owner buys wonderful fish and shellfish from the Adriatic; he uses simple recipies to enhance the flowour and natural taste of his produce.

He also knows exactly the right wine to go with each dish.

So let me make it clear; we travelling salesman are not necessarily always eating in expensive restaurants.

carsWe are often happy with a good-quality sandwich at lunchtime.

In Europe it is now easy to find street vans with simple but delicious sandwiches like pork and onions, tasty and a pleasure to eat.
